John 6:35 NKJV

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”

You know what bread is. Bread and water are what you live on, and they sustain you.

People who followed Jesus were hungry. And He had just fed five thousand people. Many people were following Him in the hope of getting a free meal! And although they had eaten, they were not satisfied.

Humanity experiences something similar today. People cannot taste, cannot enjoy, and cannot be filled because they are not aware of the true Spiritual Bread. The plight of Adam’s sons and daughters is pitiful indeed!

Adam’s descendants seek happiness but don’t find it. They eat but are not satisfied. Their hearts are restless because they don’t rest in Jesus, the bread of life. Although they are relatively content for some time, their contentment fades fast.

In the Old Testament, the Israelites were unsatisfied even with manna—the food of the angels—in the wilderness. They ate without faith and grumbled, “Manna again?” And Jesus was the water that gushed forth from the rock in the wilderness.

Jesus now tells them He is the bread of life. And He tells them if they eat this bread, they will never hunger. Also, Jesus tells them if they believe in Him, they will never thirst.

Bread of life means Jesus is the true Word of God. He is the revelation of God, the Father. God speaks to humanity through the person of His Son (Hebrews 1:2). In reality, Jesus is truly the one who presents you a relationship with God. Without Jesus, you don’t have a relationship with the Father.

Hunger is an enormous motivator. Imagine a time when you were really hungry. Now imagine how it would be if you were that hungry for God. Wouldn’t it be good if you were hungry for Jesus, God’s Bread?

Recognizing physical hunger is so simple. Yet, people have trouble identifying that emptiness in their souls as a hunger for God. Who can fill this emptiness? Only God through His Son! Who can quench your spiritual thirst? Only Jesus Christ! And who can satisfy your spiritual hunger? Again, only Jesus Christ!

Come to Him. Listen to His teachings. Permit His words to give you life. You can eat of the bread of life only by coming to Jesus and believing in Him. And if you do so, you will never go hungry, and you will never be thirsty.

In Christian life, you will find spiritual nourishment in reading the Bible, praying to the Father, fasting, service, and encouragement.
